The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal government dental benefit designed to help reduce financial barriers to oral health care for eligible Canadians. The plan provides partial coverage for a wide range of dental services for residents who do not have private dental insurance and who meet specific income and residency requirements.
Pomegranate Dental proudly welcomes CDCP patients and is happy to assist both new and existing patients in understanding how the plan works and how it can be used toward their dental care. It is important to note that the CDCP is a government benefit program and not a free dental plan. Coverage levels and patient co-payments vary based on household income.
The CDCP is intended for Canadians who do not have access to dental benefits through employment, school, or private insurance. It is managed by Health Canada and administered by Sun Life, who determines eligibility, coverage levels, and benefit administration. Dentists are not involved in deciding eligibility or approving coverage.
The CDCP may be used alongside other government dental programs and does not replace private dental insurance.
You may be eligible for the Canadian Dental Care Plan if you meet all of the following criteria:
▪ You do not have existing dental insurance coverage
▪ Your adjusted annual household income is less than $90,000
▪ You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes
▪ You filed a tax return for the previous year
Eligibility is determined by Health Canada. To check your eligibility or apply, visit Health Canada directly or contact their helpline at 1-833-537-4342, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time.
If you are covered under other government dental programs such as Healthy Smiles Ontario, Ontario Works (OW), or ODSP, benefits can be coordinated. In these cases, the CDCP acts as the primary payer relative to Ontario dental programs.
